By the time Sam came home, she felt like she had a good basis for her further investigations.

“Whatcha got?” Sam asked, glancing over the notes in her notebook open on the table.

“Persons of interest,” she said. She pulled baked chicken and potatoes from the oven and retrieved a chilled green salad from the fridge. “The police back in ’47 had three men on their radar, but couldn’t build a substantial case against any of them.”

She moved her notebook out of the way to the kitchen counter so she could set the table, but as soon as she pulled plates from the cupboard, Sam took them and laid them out.

“Thanks,” she said. She glanced at her notes. “Guy Number 1: Joey Micelli. He was twenty-four when Lana died, so two years older than she. He worked with her at the Italian bakery and was, apparently, in love with her. Also apparently, she did not return that love.”

While Sam got silverware and napkins, Lacey forked pieces of roasted chicken onto a platter and wrapped the potatoes in a towel.

“Guy Number 2,” she continued, “was Paul Zamorano, a customer at the bakery. He was thirty-one when she died. There was definitely some interest between the two, but it was unclear if they had actually dated.”

She got out glasses and poured iced tea for both of them, and they were ready to eat.

“Guy Number 3: Del Straehern, a guy she knew from school. He was thirty, and worked in the library. Seems like they were friends but maybe moving toward dating.”

“So three potentials with sexual interest,” Sam mused. He had a thought and pointed his fork at her notebook. “Did they have rape kits back then? Do DNA testing?”

Lacey shook her head. “Nope. Too early. Rape kits weren’t developed until the late ‘70s.”

“Too bad,” he said.

She agreed. Rape kits or DNA evidence could make a case a slam dunk. Even if the police didn’t have DNA directly from a suspect, they could now often get a match through familial DNA that was just as good.

“So how do we go at this?” Sam asked. “I’m assuming all the suspects are dead by now.”

“You’re right. Even Joey, the youngest, died in the early 2000s, the others before that. I’ll just have to hunker down and start digging.” She sighed. “Of course the rub is that it may not even be one of these guys, but someone else entirely. We don’t have a lot to go on.”

“What did Daniel say? Dark hair, swarthy skin? And kind of heavy?”

“Yeah, that’s right. I’ll see what pictures I can find of all of them. And I want to get a better picture of Lana, too.” She cut some chicken off the bone and took a small nibble. Perfect, if she said so herself. “Also,” she said, “I looked up split souls today.”

“Yeah?” Sam looked up with mild interest.

“They say—and you know who ‘they’ are—that twin souls often look alike and share personality traits or preferences. I’m not sure how similar a man of Polish descent can look to a young Italian girl, but we can check it out.
